After our two week break, our first graders have been busy bees getting back into the swing of things!

Some learning targets we’ve been working on this week…

-I can spell fall site words correctly including little, like, that, have, my.

-I can use a graphic organizer to write about activities using at least two details for each activity that I participated in over winter break.

-I can include important details in my writing by using questions WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW?

-I can double numbers 1-9 (2+2=4, 5+5=10)

-I can use double numbers to help me solve near double addition questions ( For example, when I’m trying to solve 4+5, first I can add 4+4 which = 8, then add 1 which equals 9.)

Hi Parents!

Last Friday I sent home both Scholastic book orders for November and December which have many great deals in them!  Now is a great time to order some books for your child as a gift for the holidays!  If you’d like to do so without them knowing, send me an email at lpingeon@lwsd.org and I’d be happy to secretly send home another order form in a closed envelope for you.  You can not only get great deals through Scholastic, but also earn our class points to fill up our classroom library.  Thanks so much for your support at home!

  • I can explain what an antonym is and give examples (hot/cold, in/out, asleep/awake, wet/dry).
  • I can give examples of different types of nocturnal animals (owl, bat, koala, hamster, kangaroo, koala, etc.)
  • I can write words that have the short o vowel in them (frog, stop, smog, etc.)
  • I can use a ten-frame to show two different parts of a whole number.
  • I can relate to books through my own text to self connections and explain my personal connections through writing.  This week we made connections by reading Kevin Henkes “Owen” and “Wemberly Worries”.
  • I can describe scientific observations I made during our air and water experiment using a vial, papertowel, foam ball and basin.
  • I can use Kelso’s Choices to problems solve.  Some examples we acted out in class were using these strategies: ignore & walk away, tell them to STOP!, make a deal, wait and cool off, go to another activity.
  • I can write interesting facts about bats!  Did you know the largest bat weighs 3 pounds and has a wingspan of over 6 feet?!
  • I wrote about eight reasons why I’m thankful on my Thanksgiving wreath.
  • I can write supporting details about myself (my family, hobby, pet, etc.).

the popsicle party for this month.  The class submitted 540 Box Tops in

Submit box tops using the form (Http://www.lwsd.org/school/sandburg/PTSA/Documents/Fundraising/boxtop-collection.pdf).

We had a great time at the pumpkin patch today!  Thank you to Madey, Leah, Sara & Renee for chaperoning!  First graders are welcome to bring their costumes to school on Monday to change into in the afternoon before our party.  Please do not have them bring hair or makeup products, as we don’t have much time for changing. We’ll be participating in an all school parade!   I hope your family has a safe, fun-filled weekend!

What’s going on this week…

  • Parent volunteers are always appreciated!  Our field trip is on Friday and I’d love to have atleast one or two more parents help to chaperone if possible.  In addition, we could use a few more parents to help with our daily reading groups, which are Tues.-Thurs. from 9:15-10:30.  If you’re interested, please let me know.
  • Please send headphones with your student to use in class if possible.  This is just one additional way we can help prevent a future lice problem.  Headphones are used during our daily reading groups on the netbooks.
  • This year we’ll have a variety of classroom celebrations.  Our first party will be this Monday at 2:15, kicking off with a Halloween parade.  If possible, I’m asking for $5 donations from each student to be used towards food, beverages, and supplies purchased by parent volunteers for all future parties this year.  If you could please send $5 in an envelope labeled “class party fund”, our class would greatly appreciate it!
  • On Monday the Kirkland Fire Department came to teach us all about fire safety.  If you family hasn’t planned a possible escape route in the case of an emergency, this week would be a great time to do so!

Learning Targets

Here are a few of learning targets our fabulous first graders have been working hard on this week:

  • Writing: I can add details to my writing about topics that come from my heart (for example: a family pet, favorite vacation spots, hobbies I enjoy, special people in my life, etc.)
  • Science: I can explore properties of a common gas, air.
  • Health: I know ways I prevent fires and how I can stay safe during a fire.
  • Math: I can find missing parts of a whole (subtraction).

Discussion of our learning targets at home helps to reinforce such important concepts!
